Will the Kerry Endorsement Resonate?

January 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Today in South Carolina, John Kerry announced his endorsement of Barrak Obama’s candidacy for president.  Kerry stated that it was Obama who has the “superb talent … to communicate the best of our hopes and aspirations for America and the world, and that is why Barack Obama has the greatest potential to lead a transformation, not just a transition.”  He also stated that Obama’s life of living abroad gained him the sensitivity to lead the nation in our foreign affairs.

But what does this say about the Edwards and Clinton camp?

Those that supported Kerry in 2004, and his belief that the Iraq war was an erroneous manuever of the American war machine, could now view Obama as having the international experience to lead the country as questions still permeate around our presence in the Middle East; where before the Clinton camp has been highlighting Barrack’s inexperience.  This could be a move that may pull votes from the Clinton base.

The other precarious notion regarding this endorsement is Kerry did not endorse John Edwards; they ran on the same ticket in 2004, and showed the nation their alignment on the hot issues of the time.  Could it be that Kerry just does not see a winning Edwards campaign?  Fox News reported that in 2004 Edwards and Kerry disagreed on campaign strategy and spending.

But I think the ultimate Clinton viability question comes from response of the Edwards camp after the endorsement:

“Our country and our Party are stronger because of John’s service, and I respect his decision.  When we were running against each other and on the same ticket, John and I agreed on many issues…I continue to believe that this election is about the future, not the past, and that the country needs a President who will fight aggressively to end the status quo and change the Washington system and to give voice to all of those whose voices are ignored in the corridors of power.”

If Edwards backs out of the race before Super Tuesday, could he endorse Barrack Obama?  And if he does endorse Obama, could that be the end of the road for the Clinton machine?  The Democrats still have Michigan, Nevada, South Carolina, and Florida to compete in before super Tuesday.  Alot can happen!
